Now is the time to look to the sea as the role of offshore development and operations is more important than ever before. Join us for Wind Finland Offshore 2025 on 21 May at Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki to learn and discuss how to gain more knowledge, address risks, and to ensure security on the seas.
Our very own Advocacy Manager Veera Villikari has been putting up the agenda and now as the time has come to reveal the first line of speakers, Veera is feeling super excited: “We have put together a timely and diverse program that covers both the development of offshore wind power and the security challenges associated with it. Expert insights and real-world case studies provide valuable perspectives on the industry’s opportunities and challenges. This is a unique opportunity to learn, network, and contribute to a secure energy future in the Baltic Sea region”.
Veera will be also stepping on the stage to give an outlook of the offshore wind power development in Finland. “It’s exciting to step onto the stage and join the conversation about the future of offshore wind in Finland. I know the event is in good hands, and I’m looking forward to what we’ll achieve together under the excellent guidance of Patrick Lees from OX2, who will be moderating the seminar”, says Veera.
The sea infrastructure under attack
This year we will take a dive under the surface and discuss security: what is the role of offshore wind parks in ensuring overall security and how should the offshore industry take cover. In the seabed security session, speakers will combine security strategies and technological solutions, exploring how innovations like sensor technologies enhance the protection of offshore wind farms and subsea infrastructure.
We are honored to welcome Michel Rademaker, Deputy Executive Director and co-founder of The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, as a speaker at our event. With extensive experience in The Royal Netherlands Army and TNO, Rademaker leads initiatives addressing critical security issues like cyber threats and resource scarcity. “His leadership in international security collaborations makes him a key addition to our event, shaping discussions on security, technology, and global stability”, Veera comments.
Followed by Michel’s presentation we’ll hear case studies on the protection of critical infrastructure by Laurens Goossens from Marlinks / Virya Energy and Anders Wiklund from OX2.
Under the surface, we will also take a closer look at the Gulf of Bothnia, where highly variable seabed conditions, limited public data, and the engineering complexity of glacial soils pose challenges for offshore wind development. Marco D’Ignazio from Ramboll Finland Oy and Tampere University steps on stage to address these territorial geotechnical risks.
Netherlands leading the way – what can we learn?
In the seminar, we will also address what we can learn from the Netherlands, which has rapidly advanced offshore wind development, raising its 2030 target from 11 GW to 21 GW and aiming for 50 GW by 2040 and 70 GW by 2050. This strategic approach has made the country a leader in the field. Meanwhile, Finland lacks national targets and is still in the early stages of offshore wind. Max Meijer from Vattenfall will share key lessons from the Dutch journey – how they got here and the challenges they’ve faced – offering valuable insights for Finland’s future development. We’ll also have Nina Vielen-Kallio from ECHT to share experiences and their success-story on how circularity has been adapted into the Dutch offshore wind industry. The efforts highlight the potential for driving sustainability and innovation in offshore wind development.
